Now being from England and a huge fan of football (yes, soccer….) I’m pretty familiar with the dutch football team Ajax and the way that this is pronounced – ‘Ai-yax’.

Then again, there’s a trusty all purpose cleaner in the UK also called Ajax – pronounced ‘Ay-jax’.

So what’s it to be? Does anyone really care?

No, probably not. I just don’t want to sound like a complete tit when i bring it up in conversation for the first time.

My understanding was it is ‘ajax’ exactly how it is read…. pronouncing the j as a j, not as a y, like they do with the soccer team…..

Being from Cape Town, South Africa, I can tell you that there is also a soccer team here called Ajax Cape Town – this is pronounced Ay-jax, but then again it is a soccer team and there is a huge amount of Dutch influence in this country……by the way, they’re not very good….. they should stick to rugby!

Well, the way I look at it…

Asynchronous JavaScript And XML — Ajax.

      Do we pronounce JavaScript, yavascript?

Alright, I’m from the US… so you probably don’t want my opinion since we totally jacked the English language (lol).

I would pronounce it like the cleaner (which we also have here in the states) ;)

      A – Jax, with a long a.

But then again, Soccer isn’t so big here, so I’ve never heard of the Dutch team and seeing it pronounced the other way. I suppose if I were to have been introduced to two different ways of saying the same word, I would be in the same predicament that you are in.

We don’t pronounce Javascript yavascript, true, but we also don’t say “up” as “oop” (snafu) – at least in the Midwestern US. Or Eight-lantic (NATO) . Nor do we say Laser with a long a. Or … ok, I’ll shut up now. I think you get my point.

I don’t know how it’s pronounced, but I personally think ayax sounds nicer than AyJax. That could be my dutch ancestry coming out, though.

Ajax is the Greek Trojan War hero. The name of the Dutch soccer club comes from him. As ancient Greek has no “J” his name was spelled Aias and pronounced as it’s spelled in Greek. In Latin and English the name is spelled Ajax and pronounced as it’s spelled. In Dutch the “J” has a sound similar to “Y.” The Dutch took the Latin spelling of Aias’s name but gave it their pronunciation. While I think it’s confusing to pronounce Ajax as if it were spelled Aias, at least one American soccer team insists that’s the way their name should be pronounced

      The consensus is…

Ajax the programming method is pronounced like:

A (as in hay, bay, may, way, tray, weigh, fray) – Jax (J as in giant, Gerald, genius and ax as in jacks, whacks, axe, tacks).

      The soccer team is pronounced:

      i – yaks

i pronounced like the standalone letter.
